Shoot Out 2013

Sarah Maren Photography 2013 has been one heck of a year for the SMP gang!  I am actually kind of shocked I am sitting here with just a day and a half left in the year.  2014 is stretched out before me full of possibilities, hopes and desires to make as many beautiful things as I possibly can.  Going through our shoot out pictures for 2013 was kind of hilarious.  My hair has been A LOT of different colors and lengths this year and Dustin went from bearded to clean shaven and back again a couple times. I had a broken hand and still jimmied a way to shoot with the incredible help of family and friends.  We got to work with incredible couples, make beautiful images and form some seriously great friends with our clients.  We can’t thank our 2014 couples enough for being so awesome, and 2014ers we are SO excited to be working with you.  Here’s to a fantastic year behind us, and another beautiful year ahead.

I can’t thank Lisa of The Goodness enough for being my right hand at our first wedding of the year.  She saved my life!  Shooting one handed – without my dominant hand, and the hand that, you know, controls EVERYTHING on a camera was wild.  Talk about stretching yourself!  Blessedly, my second cast at least gave me the use of my trigger finger, but if I NEVER have a cast again it will be all too soon.

blog_0781 blog_0780 Also there is the JOY of  working side by side with my favorite Alchemy gals!  Kate and Shannon are the BEST! And getting to work with them is always the highlight of my year.  Thanks to PJ James for changing lenses for me at this wedding (again with the broken hand stuff!) and snapping off these fun pictures.

My husband CRACKS ME UP!  He LOVES to photo bomb, and he loves to make weird faces when he’s being my light tester. All part of his charm.  I think this next set of photos also shows how our personalities are so complimentary – Dustin throws an I Love You sign, I flip him the bird.  We’re perfect for each other I tell you!

Lisa and Geoff and Baby Make Three! Maternity Portraits in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree

Maternity Photographer - Sarah Maren Photography

Lisa and Geoff are pretty incredible people – and I don’t say that because they keep having me make amazing images with them – I say it because it’s true AND because they keep having me make amazing images with them.  Geoff called me up last month and said, “Wanna take pretty pictures of us in Joshua Tree and Palm Springs AND bring your family along too?” and it took me about a quarter of a second to say, “Yuh-huh!”  And so we piled into our turbo diesel European export cars and made our way down to Palm Springs to stay at the worlds cutest hotel – The Saguaro Hotel .  Now, my kids LOVE to swim and so when they found out there was a pool, AND they got to swim in it IN NOVEMBER they were thrilled!  While Lisa, Geoff and I ran around the hotel taking pictures full of color and awesome my kids swam and had a blast.  It was FANTASTIC!  To say that I am IN LOVE with this hotel is really an understatement – it is fantastic!  Taking pictures there was like letting me loose in a candy store.  I was totally overwhelmed by the colors, texture, lines and beauty.  I could shoot there FOR DAYS!

How freaking cute are they?!?!?  Lisa’s shirt is seriously the freaking cutest thing ever.  And she is so delightfully cute all pregnant and glowy!  It made my heart SO happy.  Also, seeing my kids having loads of fun made me really happy too!  I mean, how adorable are my babies!

The next day we headed off to Joshua Tree National Park after a breakfast I have dreamed about repeatedly since then.  (Eggs Benedict on homemade corn biscuits – I mean SERIOUSLY!)  This was not only my first time to Palm Springs, but it was also my first trip to Joshua Tree.  Now, I am not a desert person AT ALL – but Joshua Tree is straight up magical.  I LOVED everything about it.  As we were driving in I saw about a thousand places to shoot.  Again, totally overwhelmed by the pretty of it all.  Lisa and Geoff picked a lovely spot where we had some lunch, and then got down to the business of making awesome pictures.  I was in HEAVEN!

It was just amazing!  Then we drove to a lookout a few miles away and grabbed this delicious shot with the last of an incredible sunset.  SO worth leaving my camera bag FULL of lenses in the middle of the dark desert for us to have to return and search for.  SO WORTH IT!

Isn’t light the most freaking amazing thing?  I just love it!  And fear not, the bag was found and the lenses are safe.  We headed back to the hotel feeling really great about the pictures we made together.  The next morning was a the kind that we don’t get very often.  It was morning of doing pretty much nothing.  We took the kids to the swimming pool for some morning laps, I sat in the jacuzzi until I was a prune, we soaked up the sun and enjoyed our time of just BEING.  That kind of morning is SO rare that I cherished every second of it.  It made the fact that we had an 8 hour drive ahead of us and I had to be on an airplane to New York at 5am the next morning much more bearable. These have become some of my favorite pictures from our trip.

I am SO excited for Lisa and Geoff to welcome their baby next month!  I can’t wait to take some pictures of their new little family.  Again, being a part of a couples wedding is awesome – but being a part of their growing family just makes everything so much better!  I can’t thank Lisa and Geoff enough for their incredible friendship and for always giving me so much room to play when I photograph them.  It is one of my greatest joys as a photographer!  You can check out Lisa and Geoff’s entry about their session on their personal blog Hello Bardot!

A Year Of Everly Mae – First Year Portraits of One Awesome Kid

everlymae_001

Once upon a time Lyndsay and Mike came and sat on the floor of my living room with me for a couple hours to talk about their wedding day.  From the moment they walked into our little condo in a not-so-great neighborhood in the early days of SMP – I knew they were my people.  We talked for hours!  We laughed, we shared excitement about the same things and I knew taking their wedding pictures would change my life.  Sure enough, it did.  Lyndsay and Mike let every wall down, invited me in and helped me create images that are, to this day, some of the most cherished I’ve ever created.  Our friendship and photo love affair didn’t stop with their wedding though.  We did their day after session, their 1st anniversary portraits and then the day came that I got the email telling me that my favorite couple was on their way to become my favorite family.  They were having a baby!  There began the year of Everly Mae.  If I have things go the way I want them to, this beautiful girl will someday marry my son and Lyndsay and Mike and Dustin and I will be the worlds coolest, globe-trotting grandparents of some undoubtedly adorable grandkids.  Fingers crossed!  With Everly having her first birthday last month I wanted to share what the Year of Everly Mae looked like.  The photo above turned me into a puddle.  I always tell people I love watching the beginnings of a family – but Lyndsay and Mike have taught me that I REALLY love watching the growing of a family.  I feel so incredibly blessed to have been able to witness the beginning of this family – from becoming husband and wife to becoming mom and dad.  Have a peek at Everly and ALL the joy she brings!
