As the mother of two children, my experience has been that the second kid throws your world into a whole new orbit. I felt like I had just gotten the hang of mothering my first when my second made their entrance to the world and we had a new person changing up every dynamic. Despite the chaos that ensued, there was a deep and beautiful feeling of completeness that I didn’t expect. When my second child joined our family it felt whole. Walking into Summer and Greg’s home to meet their new addition, Charlie let me witness first hand what that feeling of wholeness looked like. Charlie joined his big brother, James, as part of a family of amazing humans who I adore completely.
Charlie has already set a precedent for being his own guy. I was supposed to photograph his birth as I did James’. Charlie had other plans. Summer texted me that her water had broken. She was going to head off to the hospital and text me again when she arrived. The next text I received an hour or so later was a photo of a baby with a hat on. From the time of our text exchange to the time Charlie arrived was less than 20 minutes. Where James’ birth lasted over 24 hours, Charlie arrived VERY unexpectedly at home. Charlie basically fell out! I couldn’t believe it!
Needless to say, I was thrilled to meet Charlie a few days later for an in-home portrait session of this fresh family of four. Charlie was an angel who slept through most of our session. Big brother James was pretty excited about the bubble gun I brought him and we basically did a whole photoshoot of just him in the backyard playing with it while little brother ate. It was clearly the best idea I’ve ever had! 
Another highlight of this session was being there for the unboxing of Summer and Greg’s anniversary wine! It was five years before that these two tied the knot and during their ceremony sealed up a box with a bottle of wine and letters to each other. Together in their kitchen with their boys, Summer and Greg opened the box and read the letters to each other. It was so lovely and the perfect way to end our session.
