Boys do not grow up gradually. They move forward in spurts like the hands of clocks in railway stations.
— Cyril Connolly
When I look at my five year old son it is difficult for me to think that someday he will be a surly teen about to jump ship from boyhood and embark on the journey of being a man. I can’t imagine him not fitting in my arms. But, as billions of boys before him my little boy will grow and he will become a man and I will just have to deal with it as billions of mothers before me have done. I have been blessed with friends who are walking this path before I am. This boy embarking on manhood in these pictures is Harrison. The son of my beloved friend (and extremely talented floral designer), Shannon. I’ve known Harrison for a lot of years and it is incredible to see him grow and be shaped into a man. He’s graduating high school this spring so we got together and made some photos of him before all that manliness sneaks up on us. Harrison is very funny, and very smart. We had a great time walking around downtown Sacramento making images of this transitional time in his life. Normally, I’m the one making people laugh on a shoot but Harrison had me in stitches. We ended his shoot with photos of him riding his skateboard and I loved it! Motion is one of my favorite things to convay in images so this was a treat! Harrison, thanks for being awesome and for letting me photograph this exciting time in your life.
